The Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA, formerly FH mining and TFH Bochum ) is a state-recognized private university of applied sciences based in Bochum . It was founded in 1816 as a mining school for the training of foremen and medium-sized mine officials and developed in the 20th century first into an engineering school and later into a technical college. Since 1995 it has borne the name of the polymath and mining pioneer Georgius Agricola. The THGA now offers 14 bachelor's and master's degree programs in the fields of georesources and process engineering , mechanical engineering , materials science , electrical engineering and information technology , and industrial engineering . In the 2017/2018 winter semester, around 2,500 students were enrolled at the THGA, around 55% of whom are studying part-time. One focus of the THGA is on research into what is known as post-mining .
