The IFSC was created in Florianópolis by means of Decree nº 7.566, of September 23, 1909, by President Nilo Peçanha, as Escola de Aprendizes Artífices de Santa Catarina. Its objective was to provide professional training to children from less favored socioeconomic classes. The first headquarters was installed on September 1, 1910, in a building provided by the state government, on Rua Almirante Alvim, in the center of the capital of Santa Catarina. In addition to primary education, the institution offered training in drawing, typography, bookbinding and layout, riverside carpentry, sculpture and mechanics (which included blacksmithing and locksmithing). Thus, the Escola de Aprendizes Artífices operated in line with the technological advances of its time, meeting the demands of the productive sector and society at the time. There was a need to produce communication through printed media and transport solutions, which basically consisted of donkey-drawn trams and boats that transported cargo from the mainland to supply the island.
