The Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) is a public institution of higher education founded on May 15th 1968. UFS has established itself as an institution committed to excellence in teaching and research, as well as diverse extension related activities in local communities. The principal mission of the university is to contribute to the progress of the state through knowledge generation and the formation of critical, civic-minded citizens who are committed to promoting sustainable development in the region. Currently, UFS has campuses in the municipalities of São Cristóvão, Aracaju, Laranjeiras, Itabaiana and Lagarto, offering annual enrollment for 5.500 incoming freshmen with 106 course options. Other course vacancies are offered through distance learning in 15 different centers located across the state of Sergipe: Arauá, Areia Branca, Brejo Grande, Estância, Japaratuba, Laranjeiras, Lagarto, Poço Verde, Porto da Folha, São Domingos, Carira, Nossa Senhora das Dores, Nossa Senhora da Glória, Propriá and São Cristóvão. As for graduate studies, UFS offers 46 courses, including 9 PhD programs, 37 Master's degree programs and 3 professionalizing Master's degree courses.
