Kuala Terengganu Polytechnic (PKT) is the 12th polytechnic established on January 1, 1999 by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Starting with some staff led by Mr. Hasyim Bin Buyung which operates at the former Pasir Panjang Teachers College Campus, Jalan Pasir Panjang Kuala Terengganu. In June 1999 PKT moved to the old site of the Kuala Terengganu Land and District Office building on Jalan Sultan Ismail. The first recruitment was a total of 80 people in July 1999 for the Information Technology Certificate Program and Electrical Engineering Certificate. The concept of a campus in the city was voiced by the Director General of BPTV (at that time) who changed the name of Polytechnic Kuala Terengganu to Polytechnic Kota Kuala Terengganu or simply PKKT. Only two polytechnics were using Kota Polytechnic at that time (the other one being Melaka Kota Polytechnic).
