In 2019, the main sports university of the Krasnodar Territory - the Kuban State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism - turns 50 years old. On January 31, 1969, the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR "On the organization of the Institute of Physical Culture in the city of Krasnodar" was adopted. In June 1969, a sign "Krasnodar State Institute of Physical Culture" appeared on the facade of an old mansion built in 1913 by architect Ivan Klementievich Malberg for the Ekaterinodar Commercial School of the Kuban Cossack Army. The university was given the task of training physical education teachers and trainers for the southern region. On March 5, 1969, by the decision of the Board of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports under the Council of Ministers of the USSR, Anatoly Grigoryevich Barabanov, master of sports of the USSR, candidate of psychological sciences, was appointed rector of the institute. For thirty-one years, the activity of the university was carried out under the guidance of a corresponding member of the International Academy of Sciences of Higher Education, an academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, an honorary citizen of Krasnodar, the president of the Olympic Academy of the South of Russia.
