Michurinsk State Agrarian University originates from the Institute of Selection of Fruit and Berry Crops, opened in 1930 and inextricably linked with the name of the outstanding scientist-breeder Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin. He not only formed a fundamental basis for further effective activity and transformation of a higher educational institution, but also for many years predetermined the fundamental direction of development of the city named after him. In the period from 2011 to 2013, educational institutions were merged in Michurinsk-science city. The Michurinsk State Pedagogical Institute, the Michurinsk Food Industry College and the Michurinsk Agrarian College were integrated into the large scientific and educational complex of the Michurinsk State Agrarian University. Today, the university is the only agro-social university in Russia; it closely cooperates with the administration of the Tambov region and the agricultural business. The educational institution is the center of concentration of fundamental and applied research in the region for the development of competitive products in the field of horticulture, vegetable growing, healthy nutrition, biophotonics, and agricultural equipment for gardening. The university is a member of the Association of Agrarian Universities of the Central Federal District.
