The Evangelical University for Social Work & Diakonie is a private university in Hamburg sponsored by the Das Rauhe Haus Foundation . It serves to train social workers , social educators and deacons , regardless of gender. The educational institution was founded as a technical college in 1971, the roots go back to 1834 to the "brother institution" founded by Johann Hinrich Wichern . The founding pro-rector was Ulfrid Kleinert , who also taught there as a professor for diaconal studies until 1991 .
