Under the auspices of the Spanish crown and the Papal Power, on July 3, 1677, the Bishop of the Diocese of Huamanga, Don Cristóbal de Castilla y Zamora, founded the "Universitas Guamangensis Sancti Christhophosi", allocating the various rooms of his spacious Episcopal Palace to serve as a place where future high school graduates and doctors would be trained to ward off the extreme poverty of Huamanga, the Land of the Falcons. Closed in 1886 and reopened 80 years later, restarting its academic work on July 3, 1959 as the "National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga".
