The CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF CUENCA was approved as a university institution by the Illustrious President of the Freedom of Education Dr. José María Velasco Ibarra, gave the creation decree on September 7, 1970, to leave perennial memory of the Sesquicentennial of the Independence of Cuenca. With the support of Bishops José Félix Pintado and Raúl Vela Chiriboga and the populations, the University Extensions of Morona Santiago in 1973 and Azogues in 1980 were opened, and with the applause of Mons. Clímaco Jacinto Sarauz Carrillo - Third Bishop of Azogues the extensions of San Pablo de La Troncal and Cañar in 1990. That these foundations were a response to the needs of the people, is manifested by the integral development of the House of Studies and the massive presence of the scholarly Youth in its renovating classrooms, by God and by the Homeland. It celebrated its founding Silver Jubilee in 1995, expanding the university task in the nation, the continent and the world, in the double aspect of the Formal University and the Open University, confirming its mission as an educational Community at the service of the Peoples. It also celebrated the Pearl Wedding for the 30 years of its creation, 1970-2000. The Catholic University of Cuenca articulates teaching, research and innovation and the link with society to academic demand, to the needs of integral development, to the diversification of professions, degrees and titles, according to the occupational market, in accordance with the productive structure and national science, technology, innovation and ancestral knowledge policies, as established by the Higher Education System.
