UEMA had its origins in the Federation of Higher Schools of Maranhão – FESM, created by Law 3,260 of August 22, 1972 to coordinate and integrate isolated establishments in the higher education system of Maranhão. Initially, FESM was made up of four higher education units: School of Administration, School of Engineering, School of Agronomy and Faculty of Caxias. In 1975, FESM incorporated the School of Veterinary Medicine of São Luis and in 1979, the Faculty of Education of Imperatriz. FESM was transformed into the State University of Maranhão - UEMA, through Law nº 4,400, of December 30, 1981, and had its operation authorized by Federal Decree nº 94,143, of March 25, 1987, as a special regime Autarchy, legal entity governed by public law, in the multicampi modality. Initially UEMA had 3 campuses and seven teaching units: Basic Studies Unit; Engineering Studies Unit; Administration Studies Unit; Unit of Agronomy Studies; Veterinary Medicine Studies Unit; Education Studies Unit of Caxias; Imperatriz Education Studies Unit The objectives of UEMA, according to its Statute, approved by Decree No. 15,581 of May 30, 1997, are to promote undergraduate and graduate education, university extension and research, the dissemination of knowledge, the production of knowledge and new technologies interacting with the community, with a view to the social, economic and political development of Maranhão.
