Avenida 12 de Abril s/n y Agustin Cueva, Cuenca, Azuay, Ecuador
The University of Cuenca is based in the capital of the province of Azuay, in turn the head of the central-southern region of Ecuador. Created by legislative decree of October 15, 1867, the University of Cuenca was initially called Corporación Universitaria del Azuay. The progressive sectors headed by the first rector of the institution, Dr. Benigno Malo Valdivieso, sought the beginning of a new educational and development order for the region, free from the ties of centralism. Around 1887, positivism generated the creation of applied chairs under the leadership of German professors hired for this purpose. In 1890 the Faculty of Sciences was organized, where the teaching of pure and applied mathematics, and physical and natural sciences was developed. Under the impact of the Liberal Revolution of 1895, the Public Instruction Law, in June 1897, consecrated the recognition of the university condition of the Corporation of Azuay, which for a time was called the University of Azuay. At that time, a new social actor emerged, the student, a figure spread throughout the continent by the Argentine Reform of Córdoba in 1918, and a student representation was admitted to the University in October 1919. Since 1926, now with its definitive name of University of Cuenca, fully incorporates the principle of autonomy.
